Improved simulation of weather extremes with high resolution simulations

In the frame of the recently installed High-performance computer „Hornet“ at the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart, a so far unique simulation with the numerical weather prediction model WRF was conducted. Within this experiment, two third of he northern hemisphere was covered by a 0.03°*0.03 °grid (so called convection permitting resolution), while current simulations are often restricted to a smaller region. To conduct this special simulation, 90% of the available 3850 compute nodes of the Hornet system were used. The total data amounts to approx. 330TB. Further details and information can be found at:
